Peter Major Attended the Fifth World Science and Technology Forum and Delivered a Speech

The Fifth World Science and Development Forum was successfully held in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province from November 23 to 26, 2023. The forum was jointly hosted by the China Association for Science and Technology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Guangdong Provincial Government, and the Shenzhen Municipal Government. Peter Meijer, Vice-Chair of the United Nations Committee on Science and Technology for Development and President of the World Digital Technology Academy (WDTA), was invited to attend the forum and delivered a speech at the World Digital Economy Forum.

At the forum, Wan Gang, President of the China Association for Science and Technology, and Meng Fanli, Vice Governor of Guangdong Province and Party Secretary of Shenzhen, attended the main forum and delivered speeches. Thomas Sargent, Nobel Laureate in Economics, Thomas Sudhof, Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, Bai Chunli, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Ling Wen, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, shared their insights on topics such as global innovation, Belt and Road cooperation in science and technology, healthcare, and green energy transformation. Chen Qingquan, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Royal Academy of Engineering, presided over the keynote speech. Chen Hesheng, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhao Zhentang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Feng Donglai, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Song Yonghua, Academician of the Royal Academy of Engineering and President of the University of Macau, and Kaku Eiji, Honorary Professor of the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization in Japan, engaged in exciting exchanges of ideas and dialogue on the topic of The construction and international cooperation of large scientific facilities.
Peter Major’s Speech: Digital Economy Drives Sustainable Development of the World Economy.

The World Digital Economy Forum, themed Digital Economy: The Driving Force of Sustainable Development in the World Economy, focuses on six key topics revolving around the world economy and digital economy, and the global cooperation for the development of the digital economy. Peter Major, Vice-Chair of the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development, Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, and Zhu Min, Chairman of the World Digital Economy Forum, each delivered a speech. The opening ceremony was chaired by Chen Yong, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Chairman of the Guangdong Provincial Association for Science and Technology.

Peter Major emphasized that the digital economy and its underlying technologies play a key role in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. He also noted, “While the digital economy offers immense potential, it also brings challenges including concerns over data privacy, job losses due to automation, and the risk of exacerbating inequality. To address these challenges, coordinated global efforts, supportive policies, and inclusive strategies are needed to ensure the benefits of the digital economy are widely shared and contribute positively to sustainable development.”
