WDTA to Organize Delegates for the 2024 United Nations Future Summit

    2024-08-21 14:32:43

The United Nations Secretary-General will convene the "Summit for the Future" at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from September 22-23, 2024, preceded by the "Day of Action" Summit on September 20-21, 2024. The World Digital Technology Academy (WDTA) has been invited to attend both the Future Summit and the Day of Action Summit.

WDTA fully supports the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and has actively participated in several key UN initiatives. These include hosting the 27th UN Science and Technology Conference's AI side event titled "Shaping the Future of AI," the 2024 UN STI Forum's DigiBridge side event on digital talent development, and attending the UN Global Digital Compact meetings. WDTA has played a significant role in advancing cooperation and development in the digital technology sector. (Conference video attached at the end of the article)

    What is the Future Summit?

The Future Summit is a high-level United Nations event (at the Heads of State level) that aims to bring together world leaders to forge new international consensus on creating a better present and safeguarding the future.

Effective global cooperation is becoming increasingly vital for our survival. However, in an atmosphere of mistrust, outdated structures that no longer reflect today’s political and economic realities struggle to achieve meaningful global collaboration. This summit presents a rare opportunity to restore trust and demonstrate that international cooperation can effectively achieve agreed-upon goals and address emerging threats and opportunities.

In September this year, world leaders will gather at the United Nations to adopt the "Pact for the Future." This pact will include the "Global Digital Compact" and the "Declaration on Future Generations" as annexes.

To create more opportunities for all stakeholders to participate, the UN Secretary-General will host the Day of Action Summit before the Future Summit. The Day of Action will focus on three priority themes—Digital and Technology, Peace and Security, and Sustainable Development and Financing. Expected participants include heads of state, ministers, senior UN officials, and representatives from the private sector, civil society, and other stakeholders.

    Origin of the Summit

The proposal for the Future Summit originated from the "Our Common Agenda" report. This report was the Secretary-General's response to member states' call for opinions on how better to address current and future challenges.

The "Our Common Agenda" report calls for rebuilding trust and solidarity at all levels—among people, between nations, and across generations. It urges a fundamental rethinking of our political, economic, and social systems to ensure they serve everyone more fairly and effectively. The report also suggests corresponding innovations in the multilateral system, with the Future Summit serving as a decisive moment to reach agreement on the most critical necessary improvements.

Member states agreed to hold the summit in September 2024. They also unanimously agreed that the summit will result in an outcome—the "Pact for the Future." They have clarified the overarching purposes of this Future Summit and the "Pact for the Future": reaffirming the UN Charter, revitalizing multilateralism, promoting the fulfillment of existing commitments, and agreeing on solutions to address new challenges.
