New York —Today, the United Nations Summit of the Future opened in New York, which is the highest-level event in the history of the United Nations. Heads of state and leaders from all over the world gathered at the United Nations headquarters in New York.As one of the official activities of the United Nations Summit of the Future , the side event "Digital Identity in the Era of Artificial Intelligence" was held on the evening of September 21st. The event was led by the World Digital Technology Academy(WDTA) and focused on the pressing issue of creating a global digital identity framework in the context of the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI).
The event began with impactful message by H.E. Mr. Philemon Yang, President of the UN General Assembly (PGA), who underscored the necessity of international cooperation to navigate the ongoing technological revolution. UN Secretary-General H.E. Mr. António Guterres further emphasized that UN 2.0 would have a strong digital focus, highlighting the need for global digital solutions as AI reshapes the future.
H.E. Prof. Peter Major, Founding Chairman of WDTA and Hungarian Representative, emphasized the significance of the event in shaping a comprehensive global digital identity strategy, aiming to bridge the gap between digital and physical identities. H.E. Prof. Muhammadou Kah, Chairman of the UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development (UN CSTD) and Gambian Ambassador, brought a perspective from the Global South, calling for a unified strategy to ensure that AI advancements benefit developing nations equally.H.E.Siddharth Chatterjee, the UN Resident Coordinator in China, often calls on the international community to strengthen cooperation, build a secure and inclusive digital identity system through international cooperation, promote the responsible application of technology, and protect human rights and privacy.Prof. C.C. CHAN, CAE Member, emphasized that by building a globally unified digital identity framework and promoting the development of AI standard systems, we can foster the balance between technology and ethics, and ensure that technology serves the global well-being of humanity responsibly.
Prof. Yale Li, Executive Chairman of WDTA, delivered a compelling keynote address "Shaping Identity of the Future", outlining the critical need for a global digital identity framework that prioritizes privacy, security, and seamless integration into the AI-driven world. Prof. Li advocated for UN 2.0 to adopt a comprehensive UN Identity Strategy, ensuring that digital identities are governed ethically and inclusively on a global scale.
To ensure the safety, trustworthiness, and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology globally, WDTA announced the launch of the "AI Safety, Trust, and Responsibility" (AI STR) certification program at the event. This program establishes rigorous international standards to ensure that AI systems adhere to the highest safety and ethical standards throughout all stages of design, development, and application. It is reported that WDTA has already released three AI STR standards, including: "Generative AI Application Security Testing and Validation Standard," Large Language Model Security Testing Method"," and "Large Language Model Security Requirements for Supply Chain”.
Notable speakers included Dr. Vint Cerf,Turing Award Winner, Academician of the WDTA, Ms. Carol Roach, Under-Secretary of the Bahamas Cabinet Office, Prof. Gary Marcus, Professor of New York University, Prof. Yike Guo, Provost of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Prof. Jingbo Huang, Director of United Nations University (UNU) Institute in Macau, Prof. Serge Stinckwich, Head of Research at the UNU Institute in Macau,Prof. Zhifeng HAO, president of Shantou University and Mr. Ashutosh Chadha, Senior Director of UN Affairs at Microsoft. They shared insights into the role of digital education, innovation, and international cooperation in shaping future digital identities. Discussions highlighted the ethical, technological, and societal challenges posed by AI.
Mr. Ken Huang, Co-chair of WDTA AI STR Working Group, Mr.Nick James, CEO of WhiteGloveAI, Mr. Florin Rotar, CAIO of Avanade and Dr. Andrea Isoni, CAIO of AI Technologies discussed the key role of Chief AI Officers in shaping the digital era. They explored strategies for implementing generative AI, ethical considerations in AI development, security challenges, and best practices.
The establishment of the WDTA Americas Headquarters was announced at the event, marking a key milestone the Academy’s global expansion. Additionally, the inauguration of the US Branch of the International Academicians Science and Technology Innovation Centre(IASTIC)further strengthened collaboration between academia, technology, and international governance. The event was hosted by Patricia Thaine, Co-Founder and CEO of Private AI.The event was held by the World Digital Technology Academy (WDTA) and co-hosted by Hungary, Gambia, the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (UN CSTD), Cloud Security Alliance Greater China Region (CSA GCR), United Nations Digital Security Alliance (UNDSA), and the International Academicians Science and Technology Innovation Centre(IASTIC).
